DIY Spring Aroma Sprays
| Mountain Rose Herbs |
Spring is upon us and with it comes many adventures from cleaning out all the nooks and crannies of your home to long road trips exploring faraway trails. When I’m coming out of winter blues I need something to help reawaken my spirits, refresh my mind, and help me smell wonderful on the go! I sat down with our lovely aromatherapist Christine Guerts to put together some spring aroma blends for each moment of this blossoming season.
Each of these recipes produces just a small amount, a test batch let’s say. If you have been dabbling your toes in the aromatherapy world, this will be a fun opportunity to play around with making a small test batch and then multiplying it for a recipe of your choice. Below each of the recipes is a suggested use for the blend – by no means are those suggestions the limitations of this scent! Enjoy them however you’d like, use each recipe in a different way, or try all of the blends and pick your favorite to use in all of these recipes.
Recipe 1: Out to Play
A sweet and playful blend bound to excite the senses. Benzoin is a cost effective replacement for vanilla in recipes and excellent for gentle DIY skin care products. The fruity carrot seed and sweet orange combination make this an exciting and delightful blend, perfect for wearing on your body, especially during sunny adventures!
Ingredients
4 drops organic Benzoin essential oil
4 drops organic Sweet Orange essential oil
3 drops organic Carrot Seed essential oil
Suggested use: Great as a solid perfume or mixed with jojoba oil in a roll top bottle which can be found here. If you want to make a solid perfume, you can follow our balm base recipe here and simply replace the organic essential oil blend with the Out to Play recipe, multiplying the ingredient measurements above by 7. If blending for a roll top bottle, make sure your essential oil blend doesn’t constitute more than 1-2% of your total blend. This means in a 1 oz bottle you would want no more than 6-12 drops of essential oil. If you have questions or want to learn more about converting drops to ml to oz you can check out our handy conversion guide!

Recipe 2: Soft Clean Breeze
This is a soft smelling and cleansing combination of powerful citrus laced with the delicately spicy nutmeg, topped off with a touch of fresh fir needle.
Ingredients
5 drops organic Lavender essential oil
6 drops organic Grapefruit essential oil
4 drops organic Fir Needle essential oil
1 drop organic Nutmeg essential oil
Suggested use: This blend will work great as an air freshener. A perfect way to diffuse essential oils in your car is by using one of our Terra Cotta Pendant Diffusers. Simply place a couple drops of this blend onto a pendant and enjoy the luxurious car scents for weeks to come!
Recipe 3: Awakening
A wonderfully sharp and penetrating combination of petitgrain, uplifting rosemary, with balancing and energizing eucalyptus. Great for pulling your spirits right out of that winter muck.
Ingredients
5 drops organic Petitgrain (combave or regular) essential oil
3 drops organic Rosemary essential oil
2 drop organic Eucalyptus essential oil
Suggested use: Drip oils together in a glass spray bottle and mix by rolling the bottle between the palms of your hands. Pour 1 oz organic witch hazel extract to the top of the bottle and shake well. Spray in the air or on the body when in need of a smile.
Recipe 4: Spring Flowers
A royal blend of floral scents because nothing says “spring!” like blossoming flowers! If you are lucky enough to have both of these luxurious essential oils around your house, get ready for a treat. If you have one or the other or don’t want to overindulge on your essential oil collection, you can replace lavender for either of these floral oils to create an impressive scent, sure to please guests from far off lands.
Ingredients
4 drops organic Neroli essential oil
2 drops Jasmine Absolute esssential
Suggested use: In a diffuser of your choice, add 1-2 drops at a time of the blend and diffuse per the instructions. Enjoy!

Top 10 Ways to Recover After Gluten Exposure | Celiac Handbook
Symptoms of gluten exposure can vary widely and may include:
- Muscle and Body Aches
- Joint Pain
- Fatigue
- Bloating or Gas
- Nausea or Stomach Cramps
- Constipation or Diarrhea
- Rashes, Acne, or Other Skin Disturbances
- Headaches or Migraines
- Depression or Anxiety
- Brain fog
- Irritability
- Exacerbation of Existing Disease Processes
The severity of symptoms from gluten exposure and the length of time it takes to recover depends on numerous factors, including the amount of gluten exposed to, length of time from last gluten exposure, degree of gluten intolerance, presence of celiac disease, health of the digestive tract, existing inflammation or infection in the body, and overall health status. Some people find that they can recover from gluten exposure within a few days, while others may experience significant setbacks in their health that last weeks to months. For those with celiac disease, it may take years for complete healing of the small intestine after gluten exposure, although outward symptoms may resolve much sooner.
Regardless of what symptoms you experience from gluten exposure, there are some steps that you can take to aid the recovery process:
New Study: Why This Common Food Has Radically Increased Celiac Disease, Autism, Alzheimer’s,
The use of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the broad-spectrum herbicide Roundup, has dramatically risen over the past 15 years, right in step with the use of GE crops.
According to Dr. Stephanie Seneff, a senior research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), glyphosate appears to be strongly correlated with the rise in celiac disease.
Dr. Anthony Samsel and Dr. Seneff produced some phenomenal research on this connection, which was published in December last year. Previously, she has investigated the relationship between glyphosate and the development of a wide array of modern diseases, including autism.New Study: Why This Common Food Has Radically Increased Celiac Disease, Autism, Alzheimer’s,

Walk Towward a Healthy Heart
There are countless physical activities out there, but walking has the lowest dropout rate of them all! It's the simplest positive change you can make to effectively improve your heart health.
Research has shown that the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day can help you:
- Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
- Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
- Improve blood lipid profile
- Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
- Enhance mental well being
- Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
- Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
- Reduce the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes
There really are so many benefits for such a simple activity!
Sole-Mate: A Friend By Your Side
The thought of being alone can be enough to keep some people from walking. The best way to solve this is by finding a friend to walk with. You can plan walking paths that are convenient for both of you, or map out routes that take you places you've never been before. It's a great way to exercise and spend time with friends! Visit our MyWalking Clubs website and connect with others!
Walking for Health
Walking keeps your brain sharp, body slim and agile, boosts your immunity, and improves your mood by boosting seretonin. It’s easy, requires no special equipment, and you can do it at your own pace.
Benefits of walking for your health are:
Women who did the equivalent of a 45-minute walk 5 times a week were two-thirds less likely to catch a cold, according to a Washington University study.
May assist with preventing dementia.Walking is a natural memory booster, according to an Italian study published in the journalNeurology. Exercisers ages 65 and older who briskly walked just over 5 miles a week were 27 percent less likely to develop dementia than their couch potato peers. In another study presented earlier this year at the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, walking actually increased the size of the hippocampus — the part of the brain responsible for memory formation.
Maintains joint health .As little as 10 minutes a day may improve circulation and help to keep joints lubricated, staving off arthritis symptoms.
It helps curb cravings.Meanwhile, 15 minutes of trekking can also help you say no to chocolate, reported University of Exeter researchers. When self-proclaimed chocoholics abstained from chocolate for 3 days, then either took a walk or rested before performing tempting activities such as opening a chocolate bar, they reported lower cravings following the walk.
Weight loss..Adding just one extra mile of walking a day burns enough calories to shed 10 pounds this year — without changing anything else.
Enhances Mood. But more is even better. Just 10 minutes a day was enough to boost walkers’ energy levels by 18 percent according to one study. But in another study by researchers at the University of North Carolina where women walked for either 30 or 60 minutes, three times a week for 6 months, the 60-minute walkers improved their body confidence and can-do-it attitude four-fold.
Reduces Triglycerides.Walking beats running when it comes to lowering triglycerides, a type of blood fat linked with heart disease risk, according to a Duke University study. Walkers who logged 50 minutes four times a week lowered their triglyceride levels by more than 20 percent — twice as much as joggers in the same study.
Heart Health. For your heart, that is. When Washington University researchers had people in their 50s and 60s walk briskly for about 45 to 60 minutes a day for a year, by the end of the program their hearts pumped as efficiently as adults in their 30s and 40s. The older group also dropped an average of more than 20 pounds—without significantly changing their diet!
May assist with Diabetes prevention.
Daily walking is potent enough to reverse early symptoms of type 2 diabetes in as little as a week, University of Michigan researchers discovered. In just 7 days, sedentary, pre-diabetic adults improved their insulin sensitivity by 59 percent.

Decreases menopause symptoms.Watch out you hormone-triggered headaches and menopause-related weight gain! Twenty-five minutes of walking a day yielded 44 percent fewer headaches and 22 percent fewer reports of weight gain among menopausal women.
Cancer Prevention.Regular exercise — including walking — has long been shown to decrease your risk of many diseases including certain cancers. But according to new research published in the May 2011 issue of the journal Cancer Research, walking also makes a good weapon after you’ve been diagnosed with cancer. Among men with prostate cancer, those who walked for at least 3 hours a week had a 57 percent lower rate of progression.

Omega Fatty Acids
The average American diet has a fat intake of just under 33% of total calories consumed. This value is well within the range that is considered healthy by the dietary recommended intake (DRI) committee. However, at least a quarter of the population consumes 35% or more of their total calories from fat – usually due to processed and fast foods that are high in saturated and trans fatty acids, often referred to as “bad” fat. Over time, foods that are rich in “bad” fat have been found to promote health risks.
That’s because the types of fat that you eat can actually alter the fatty acid composition of cell membranes, which play vital roles in so many cellular functions. This is even true for the cell membranes of the heart; we think of the heart as very stable tissue, but it can be rapidly modified. Eating an abundance of bad fat weakens cell membrane structure, so the cells can’t function at optimal levels. Conversely, a diet rich in “good” fats can strengthen cell membrane structure, supporting general health and well-being.
As a rule, “good” fats are the unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats are the backbone of the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet and have been shown to help maintain heart, joint, brain, skin and menopausal health. Monounsaturated fatty acids include palmitoleic acid and oleic acid, which are abundant in olives, olive oil, nuts and avocados. Polyunsaturated fatty acids include linoleic acid (LA), gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which can be found in fish, sardines and walnuts, as well as soybean, sunflower, fish, borage, evening primrose and flax seed oils.
Omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids are all unsaturated fats. And, research has shown that they must be consumed on a daily basis. However, few Western diets offer the proper omega-6:omega-3 ratio for optimal health, which is currently estimated at 4:1 or even 2:1. In fact, for most Americans, the ratio falls between 10:1 and 20:1.
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids. That means they are necessary for optimal function of every cell in the body. But they can only be obtained through food and supplementation. Omega-3 fatty acids consist of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) – the only omega-3 form found in plants - and its derivatives EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA - which are found in fish, sardines, walnuts and flax seed oil - are primarily responsible for the positive brain, heart and joint support properties associated with omega-3 fatty acids. DHA is considered the major building block of human brain tissue and is particularly abundant in the grey matter of the brain and other neural tissues, including the light-sensitive cells in the retina of the eye. DHA enhances the response of rhodopsin – a pigment that allows for night vision – for optimal visual health. DHA also mediates the transport of choline (a methyl donor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine) and amino acids, glycine and taurine, in the brain for proper cognitive health.
All Bluebonnet’s formulas that provide omega-3 fatty acids are in a natural triglyceride form. The natural triglyceride form is 300 times more bioavailable than most other fish oil forms – and far more stable. In fact, many fish oils use a synthetic ethyl ester form, which is subject to oxidation and rancidity and can make the fish oil less effective. Plus, all omega-3 formulas that are derived from fish or algal oils have undergone intensive purification. These include a four-step purification process, molecular distillation, and/or steam distillation. These processes eliminate virtually all heavy metals (like mercury), PCBs, dioxins and other contaminants, as well as the unpleasant fishy taste and odor often associated with marine fish oils. www.bluebonnetnutrition.com/product/150/Certified_Organic_Flax_Seed_Oil_1000_mg_SoftgelsBlueBonnet Nutrition

Make It Yourself - Herbal Sunscreen
Healthy Skin Herbs
Calendula
Known for its anti-inflammatory and skin healing properties. Slightly astringent and antiseptic.
Lavender
Lavender is a calming and relaxing herb. It is antispasmodic, antiseptic, and used to relieve sunburns, insect bites, cuts, blemishes, and muscular aches. A classic healing herb for skin – especially minor burns.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe helps to both moisturize the skin while being mildly astringent to draw out heat. It is soothing and helps relieve irritation from sunburn, minor skin burns, rashes, and insect bites.
Neem Oil
Neem oil is a rich and thick (you may need to heat it in warm water to use it) golden brown base oil with a strong and nutty aroma. Neem oil is derived from pressed neem tree nuts and has antiseptic, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. Neem also has a low natural SPF which will help protect your skin!
Sesame Oil
Sesame oil comes from pressed sesame seeds. Sesame oil is an antioxidant base oil and is a source of vitamins A and E and protein. Sesame oil has a long shelf life and also has a low natural SPF.
Refined Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a great ingredient for lip balms, lotions, deodorants, and is known as the ultimate skin softener. Makes a great after-sun treatment.
Olive Oil
Derived from the first pressing of ripe olives with beneficial vitamins and minerals. It is a great oil for infusing herbs, although in body care it is best used lightly unless you enjoy the aroma. In this recipe, you won’t be able to smell it in the end.
Beeswax
Beeswax is used as a thickener in recipes for creams, lotion, salves, butters and balms. It also adds a lightly protective barrier to the skin. If you desire a vegan recipe, you could replace it with carnauba wax.
Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter smells heavenly! Cocoa butter is hard at room temperature but easily melts at body temperature. This will help keep your final product solid until you rub it on. Great before, during, and after sun!
Shea Butter
Derived from pressed shea nuts, this butter is a cream-colored soft substance with a strong nutty fragrance. Shea butter is a highly emollient, skin softening additive that’s great for lotions and creams, as well as body balms and nail care.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender Essential Oil contains all of the amazing healing power of lavender flowers, but concentrated into a highly aromatic and therapeutic oil. A few drops go a long way, so I use this oil both as a soothing agent and for fragrance since it blends deliciously with the scent of the cacao and shea butter.
Make It Yourself Herbal Sunscreen
Ingredients
1/8 cup organic Calendula or organic Lavender infused oil (Jojoba, Grapeseed, or Olive Oil)
1/8 cup Aloe Vera Gel
1/8 cup organic Neem Oil
1/8 cup organic Sesame Oil
1/8 cup organic Coconut Oil
1/8 cup Beeswax Pastilles
1/8 cup organic Cocoa Butter or 10 wafers
1/8 cup organic Shea Butter
40 drops organic Lavender essential oil
1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
1/8 cup Aloe Vera Gel
1/8 cup organic Neem Oil
1/8 cup organic Sesame Oil
1/8 cup organic Coconut Oil
1/8 cup Beeswax Pastilles
1/8 cup organic Cocoa Butter or 10 wafers
1/8 cup organic Shea Butter
40 drops organic Lavender essential oil
1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
2 Tbsp Zinc Oxide (non-micro)
These tins work perfectly to store your natural sun block.
Directions
When making body care products that include oils and butters and other ingredients, always melt butters first. You can do this using a double boiler over medium heat.
1. In a Pyrex bowl, melt together coconut oil, beeswax, cacao butter, and shea butter over gently simmering water.
2. Once melted, add in your oils and your aloe vera gel.
3. Once everything is adequately mixed together, remove from heat and then stir in the zinc oxide if using. Be careful while doing this step, zinc can be irritating if it comes into contact with mucous membranes, especially in this powder form. Wear cloth around your nose and mouth and goggles. It is important to agitate as much as possible at this stage. Use a whisk to mix thoroughly.
4. Lastly, add in your essential oils and Vitamin E Oil. Stir until well distributed.
5. Pour into containers and let cool until solid before closing with a lid.
The sunscreen will be usable in about an hour, but will harden more overnight. Apply a thin layer when out and about in the sun, every hour for optimal nourishment.
Holiday Aromatherapy Recipe - Vanilla Spice
Vanilla cream mixed with cinnamon goodness.
42 drops organic Cinnamon essential oil
42 drops organic Orange essential oil
25 drops organic Vanilla Absolute (roughly 1/4 teaspoon)
17 drops organic Nutmeg essential oil
42 drops organic Orange essential oil
25 drops organic Vanilla Absolute (roughly 1/4 teaspoon)
17 drops organic Nutmeg essential oil
Blending Directions and Tips:
Add all essential oils to a glass bottle. One 1/4 oz bottle will hold any of these blends. Screw cap on tightly and invert the bottle to blend the oils. Do not shake! Allow the blend to sit for a couple of hours, smell test, and make any adjustments to your liking.
Vanilla Absolute is a very thick oil. The container can be placed in a bowl of hot water to make it easier to work with. This will not effect the aroma and the oil with thicken again as it cools. It may be easier to use a measuring spoon for this oil.
